How to use this index

Each color page carries the same set of things: the hex, RGB, HSL and OKLCH values, an eleven-step shade scale generated in OKLCH, contrast figures against white and black, and the palettes from that color family. The scale is the part worth bookmarking, it gives you a usable light and dark version of any color rather than one isolated value.

To work from a color you already have rather than one on this list, paste it into the color picker, which builds the same scale from any input, or the palette generator, which builds a four-color scheme around it.

Fixed color vocabularies

Two lists on this site are not catalogs but standards, closed sets that cannot grow. The CSS color names are the keywords a browser understands instead of a hex code, sorted here by hue rather than alphabetically so that similar colors sit together. The 216 web safe colors are what every display could show when screens held 256 colors, kept as a reference rather than as advice.
